As a teenager he shook Elvis’s hand backstage in Las Vegas. In 1990, Earl Poole Ball turned him around at Knott’s Berry Farm — Johnny Cash and June Carter had just rolled up in a golf cart. “I think my knees buckled. He looked about twelve feet tall.”

Those meetings are the spine of the night. Act I is the Man in Black — Folsom, Ring of Fire, Ghost Riders, the Sun Records lore. Act II is the King, and “Would He Believe,” written after Memphis.

Not an impersonator show. History, played loud. Premiered at Spreckels. Sold out the Raven after the Tubbs Fire. This concert record is the document of that night.
