Born in San Francisco, raised in Marin, then Los Angeles, Nashville, and fifteen years of nightly western stages at Rawhide. He has performed as Steven Kent since 2012. Before that: Steve Barker / Steven Kent Barker, including an early-1980s singer-songwriter chapter at Elektra Records (Warner Music Group). Tracks were cut. The label chapter ended. The songs stayed.

Would He Believe
It started at seven. Clicking through the television at his grandparents’ house, he heard Elvis, then asked his mother if she knew the name. The next day she took him to the record store and he bought two. Years later, as a teenager, he shook Elvis’s hand backstage in Las Vegas. In 2002 after the 25th Candlelight Vigil, Steven returned to his motel room and wrote Would He Believe. In 2012, at the 35th Elvis Week, he wrote it on the Wall at Graceland. Steven produced Dream & Believe, with Terry Blackwood as co-producer.

In 1990, Earl Poole Ball turned him around at Knott’s Berry Farm — Johnny Cash and June Carter had just rolled up in a golf cart. Those two meetings — Elvis as a teenager, Cash in 1990 — are the spine of Cash & King: two sets, his stories, then the band.
